Just I figure that's just fine. I make altogether cake for myself every yr (considering I'yard really picky near cake), and so I might as well assistance my kids make me something cute for Female parent's Day!
And hey, maybe some of y'all are dads, or grandmas, or teachers, or someone else who can assist kids make a little souvenir for their mom. Perfect! Help them make shrinky dink keychains for Mom:
So I had NEVER used a shrinky dink until a couple of months ago, when I ordered a package of shrinky sheets to play effectually with. MY CHILDREN ARE HOOKED! They absolutely dearest this stuff.
In case yous don't know what shrinky dinks are, hither's the rundown:
- You buy a package of shrinky sheets, which look like transparency sheets but are a little thicker.
- Kids tin can trace a design or color their ain on the shrinky sail, so cut it out.
- Bake the shrinky sail in a 325 degree oven for 5 minutes – the design shrinks to about 1/3 of its original size.
- When it cools, the shrinky dink blueprint hardens up and becomes thick and durable.
Sounds simple possibly, but it'due south actually fun!
My kids especially enjoy tracing a design on the shrinky sheet – information technology'due south easier to brand something cool when tracing at a larger size. So I made a template for this Super Mom keychain that y'all tin print out and trace. Proceed reading for the pace by stride!
NOTE: My kids are nine and eleven and both were able to do a pretty good task tracing the letters and coloring in the design. The xi year old can practise the baking by himself besides. Small kids may have a harder time tracing the letters, so it might brand sense to take an adult do that part and let the child colour in the background.
Supplies for a Shrinky Dink Keychain
This is what you'll need to make the SuperMom shrinky dink keychain:
- Shrinky Sheet – I used this brand that I ordered from Amazon (that's an affiliate link). Nosotros take been very pleased with how these sheets have worked. This make makes both clear and white sheets; I utilize articulate considering my kids like to trace designs
- Fine grit sandpaper – Shrinky sheets accept color much better after they've been sanded. I believe y'all can purchase pre-sanded shrinky sheets only I haven't tried them.
- Black Sharpie
- Colored Pencils
- Pair of scissors
- Hole Punch
- Key Concatenation – the Shrinky sheets I linked above come up with keychains
How to make a Shrinky Dink Keychain
Get-go, you will need to download and impress the template:

Impress out the template on 8.5×11 paper at full size. Cutting ane of the shrinky sheets into quarters. You volition only demand 1 quarter for each keychain.
Using your fine dust sandpaper, sand the shrinky sheet until it'southward quite cloudy (photograph in a higher place on the left is earlier it's been sanded, and photo on the right is subsequently it'due south sanded). I like to sand all in one direction. You merely need to sand for a infinitesimal or two, merely don't skip this step or the colored pencil won't work. Anywhere that yet feels sleeky needs more sanding. When you're done sanding, wipe it off with a textile.
Next, employ masking tape to tape the shrinky canvass to the template. This ensures it doesn't movement effectually every bit you trace. Use a blackness Sharpie to fill in the letters. Try to stay Inside the letter outlines for all-time results. Young kids will have a hard fourth dimension doing this on their ain – either an adult can help with this step OR you tin can only let the child do her best (Mom will dearest information technology anyway!).
The Sharpie should dry immediately, only gently touch it just to make sure and wait a few minutes it if smears at all. So apply a colored pencil to completely color in the shield shape. You can colour right over the Sharpie – as long as information technology's dry out it shouldn't smear. You desire to get the background colored in equally completely every bit you can. Vivid colors piece of work all-time.
Finally, either trace around the edge of the shield or make marks at the corners and then you know where to cut.
Cutting out the shield and utilize a hole punch to punch a hole near 1 corner.
How to bake the Shrinky Dink keychain
Bake your shrinky design co-ordinate to the parcel directions. If you are using the same Shrinky Sheets as I used, you will want to place your pattern on a piece of parchment paper on a cookie canvass (parchment paper is recommended only probably not strictly necessary). Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Place the cookie canvass in the oven and cook 4-five minutes, until the design has shrunk and is completely apartment again.
While a shrinky dink bakes, it shrinks and the edges gyre upward. If you look at it while information technology's baking, information technology may await like it'southward completely ruined! The edges will be all curled and it may kind of roll to ane side. Here'south what one of ours looked like halfway through baking:
But don't worry! Simply continue letting it bake and it will flatten back down all past itself. Once it's completely flat, pull it out of the oven and let information technology cool on the cookie canvass – it only takes a couple of minutes.
Once it's cool, you can thread one of the included keychains through the pigsty:
Shrinky Dink Tips
- Remember that shrinky designs will shrink to nearly one third of their original size. The SuperMom shield template is 4.iii inches wide, and later baking the design shrinks down to about 1.5 inches broad. If you desire it to be bigger, you lot can overstate the template.
- Sharpies tin can be used on these shrinky sheets without sanding first, although you accept to exist careful not to smear them. Even so, nosotros prefer colored pencils because the Sharpie ink darkens quite a fleck when baked, then much that colors change. Colored pencils stay the same color during blistering. Colored pencils also stop up more than opaque after baking than pens.
- If you tin can see lots of lines and empty spaces in the background after baking, that ways you didn't sand the shrink sheet well enough before coloring.
- Very big designs are a piffling difficult to manage when baking because they tin roll onto themselves and become stuck. We take constitute that anything that uses only a quarter sail or less bakes very well.
